Acupressure is a therapy based on the same principles as Acupuncture, but instead of using needles, pressure is applied with the fingers and thumbs to key points on the surface of the body. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the life force energy in the body (chi), flows through the body in a series of pathways, or meridians. If this energy flow becomes blocked or slow, illness or pain can result. An acupressure practitioner knows exactly where to apply pressure to on the body, to treat different symptoms. Acupressure can be used to relieve stress, tension and headaches, increase blood circulation and remove toxins from the body, help relieve muscular aches and pains, and help to promote an overall feeling of well being and increased energy. Shiatsu, a physical therapy that incorporates the application of pressure to the acupuncture points, is sometimes referred to as acupressure. Please see under Shiatsu for more information. On-Site Seated Acupressure Massage is based on a traditional Japanese massage called 'Anma'. Its present form was developed in the USA in the 1980s, as an effective and refreshing type of massage in the workplace. Designed to combat upper body tension brought on by prolonged repetitive work, this therapy has now also become very popular in the UK corporate sector. The client sits fully clothed for around 15 to 30 minutes in a specially designed chair, whilst the practitioner applies varying degrees of pressure to the acupressure points on the head, neck, back, shoulders, arms and hands. No oils are used and in a short time the client feels relaxed, energised, motivated - and ready to return to work. It is an easy and effective way of creating a feeling of wellbeing at work for all levels, from junior employee up to senior management.
