ABOUT THE BOWEN TECHNIQUE...

BOWEN TECHNIQUE is a gentle remedial therapy originally developed in Australia after the second world war by Tom A. Bowen, and introduced to Britain in 1993.
Although Tom Bowen had no formal medical training, he appeared to have the ability to acurately understand the human body, and how to manipulate it to relieve pain and physical discomfort.

Bowen Therapy aims to rebalance the body and stimulate its own self healing responses, resulting in relief from pain, general recovery, and an increased feeling of wellbeing. It can benefit many common conditions including back, neck or shoulder pain, joint pain and arthritis, headaches and stress related conditions, repetitive strain injuries, insomnia, respiratory problems and allergies.

Using mainly fingers and thumbs, a Bowen therapist will perform a series of gentle, rolling movements, manipulating the connective tissues on the body. This is carried out either over light clothing or on the skin, whilst the client is lying down on a therapy couch. The therapist will also be able to sense where there is tension in various areas of the body, and then use the appropriate moves or combination of moves to release that tension.
The moves are very subtle, no force is used, and this gently therapy is suitable for all ages, from babies to the elderly.

A session will usually last for around 45 minutes to an hour, including breaks, where the therapist pauses for a while to allow the body to respond to each part of the treatment.
It is usually recommended to drink plenty of water after each treatment, and to avoid having other types of manipulative therapy while undergoing Bowen treatment, as this may disrupt the body's necessary responses to the Bowen therapy.

Apart from it's ability to relieve pain, Bowen is also an extremely relaxing therapy to experience.
