Chiropractic is a manipulative, hands on therapy that deals with problems associated with the joints, bones and muscles. Developed in the 19th century by Canadian Daniel Palmer, it is based on the principle that misalignment of the joints, especially the spinal vertebrae, can lead to disturbances in the nervous system. As the health of our body relies on healthy nerve messages reaching our cells, organs and muscles, if the nervous system is not functioning properly and left untreated, it can give rise to pain and various illnesses. From birth, our joints can become damaged over time due to accidental injury, strain, prolonged sports activity, or bad postural habits. Chiropractors are trained to detect these misalignments (known as subluxations), and during a treatment session they will use their hands to carry out a range of specific manipulation techniques, called adjustments, on the spine and other joints. These are designed to free up any restrictions in the nervous system, and allow the affected parts of the body to function properly again. Chiropractors will treat a wide range of conditions in both adults and children, including back and neck pain, stiffness and joint pain, arthritis, muscle spasms, sports injuries, post accidental injury, headaches and migraine, and even colic in babies. Because the aim is to treat the underlying cause of the pain, and not just the symptoms, a chiropractor will approach the needs of the patient in a holistic way, taking into account any background or social issues as well as the immediate physical condition. Your chiropractor may also recommend further ongoing treatment - to allow time for the body to heal itself naturally, and to re-educate the joints and muscles into aligning better, as a preventative measure against further possible damage. Chiropractic is a highly regulated profession - all UK chiropractors undergo a lengthy training and have a legal requirement to be registered with the General Chiropractic Council before they can set up in practice.
