ABOUT PSYCHOTHERAPY...
The aim of Psychotherapy is to help you think and feel differently,
to explore and understand the issues in your life that are causing
you problems, and to support you in bringing about positive personal
change.
It is generally more intensive than Counselling - and may involve
attending several sessions a week over a period of months, and sometimes
years. It can be given on a one-to-one basis, and also to couples,
families or groups.
Psychotherapy is often used to deal with long standing psychological
problems that have built up over a period of time, and although
the therapy can sometimes be a painful process, it can also be a
liberating experience, as you open up to new creative ways of thinking
and behaviour.
There are many branches of psychotherapy available, and therapists
may specialise in different techniques. These can vary from the
'talking' therapies to more active ways of expression, such as creative
arts, drama and music therapy.
The various approaches range from humanistic, person-centred and
cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), to the more analytical types
such as psychoanalytical psychotherapy, and some therapists offer
an integrated approach, incorporating different methods. You may
come across numerous named techniques under the umbrella of 'psychotherapy'
- however, they're usually just variations of the few basic types,
which have been developed in recent years.
For treatment to be successful, psychotherapy requires a relationship
built on trust between the client and the therapist. Therefore it's
always advisable to make sure your therapist is well qualified and
experienced (see Disclaimer below). Psychotherapists are usually
registered with at least one of the professional organisations,
and should work within a strict code of practice.
As
one method may be more appropriate for your needs than another,
it's a good idea to find out exactly what's available and what each
type can help with, before embarking on any course of therapy.
