Reiki (pronounced Ray Key) is a Japanese word meaning 'Universal Life Force Energy'. This energy or 'ki', as it is known in Japan, has been recognised in the East for centuries as being vital to our health and well being. When our Life Force energy is flowing freely we feel happy, uplifted and healthy. When our energy is low or becomes blocked, we become more prone to stress, depression and illness. The Reiki system of healing was developed by Dr Mikao Usui in Japan at the end of the 19th century, after many years researching ancient healing techniques. The traditions of Reiki have been passed down over the years from teacher to student, and have since spread worldwide. A Reiki session usually lasts about an hour to an hour and a half, and takes place either sitting or lying down, fully clothed. The practitioner will place their hands lightly on the body for 3 - 5 minutes in various positions, starting at the head and working down to the feet. This allows the 'Ki' energy to be drawn through the healer’s hands to wherever it is needed in the person being treated. The flow of energy may be felt as a mild tingling sensation, warmth, coolness, or you may feel nothing at all during the session. Many people find they feel different after they have finished a Reiki session, even though they didn’t feel anything during the actual treatment. Reiki treats the person as a whole, activating the body's own self healing processes and helping to bring balance mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, as well as relieving physical symptoms and clearing out toxins from the body. There is usually a feeling of deep relaxation during and after a session, the positive effects maybe lasting several days. Reiki is regarded as a gentle, popular and non-intrusive therapy, which can be safely given to children, adults of all ages, animals and even plants. As a complementary therapy, it can safely be used alongside conventional medicine or after surgery, and may help speed up recovery time after treatment. It can also be used in conjunction with other holistic therapies, and practitioners will sometimes combine Reiki with additional healing tools, such as crystals or the use of colour.   The most popular form of Reiki is Usui Shiki Ryoho, the version originated by Dr Usui, but other variations have been developed and expanded upon in recent years, such as Seichem, Angel Reiki and Celtic Reiki. Someone who practises Reiki at a professional level will either be trained and attuned to Reiki 2nd Degree (Level 2), or will be a Reiki Master, who is able to teach and attune others to practise, as well as giving treatments themselves. If you’re interested in learning Reiki at a basic level (1st Degree), which can be used to treat yourself, family and friends, you should be able to find some Reiki master/teachers listed on this website, either in our Courses, Workshops & Retreats directory, or in our Therapists Directory.
